Product Development

For this projects, students worked in groups to design, develop, and source a line of a apparel. My group created Lilac and Lily. Lilac and Lily is a line of minimalistic bridesmaid dresses and jumpsuits targeted for brides/bridesmaids for a spring/summer 2019 wedding.
Line Development Project
One of the first things we did when we received this assignment was to brainstorm by creating concept maps. This allowed us to organize our ideas and narrow down what kind of products we wanted to develop.
Inspirations
We began our development process for this line by researching trends in the wedding/bridesmaid industry. We decided that we would aim our line to be in the spring/summer 2019 season. Throughout the brainstorming process, we collected inspiration pictures and created sketches. Once we brought all of the pictures together on our inspiration board, we noticed we all leaned towards a modern, rustic, yet simplistic, aesthetic. All the inspirations were then added into a collage using Adobe Photoshop. Doing this gave us a visual insight and direction of where we wanted our designs to go.
Planning
Planning out our line of dresses involved a lot of research and collaboration. This involved creating cost sheets involving materials, manufacturing location, and margins. Along with creating the cost sheets, we determined the best silhouettes and prices to fit our target market. We also received exact fabric and color swatches from an online retailer. For more detailed information click on the cost sheets icon and the Final Written Report below.
Final Project
We presented our final project at a showcase event for students staff, and members of the faculty to see. Here, we showcased our line and answered any questions about the final development process.
Apparel Construction
Students in this program are giving an option to take apparel construction courses. They are not required but I absolutely love sewing and creating. Therefore, I was eager and excited to take all the design courses I could! During my time at NDSU, I learned a lot about basic construction, fitting garments, draping, and pattern drafting!
Torso Black Drafting - Bias Slip Dress
For this project I started by drafted a torso block. Using my inspirations, sketch, and torso block, I went on to draft a paper pattern for an on-bias slip dress. It took a lot of fitting, alterations, and prototyping, but I am very proud of how this garment turned out!
Deconstruct Reconstruct
For this draping project I wanted to incorporate sustainability. I used old black t-shirts to create a blouse that can be layered in the winter and worn in the summer!
Garment That Hangs From The Waist
For this project I created a blue pleated skirt using a pattern. I used alterations and fitting techniques to perfect the fit of the garment.
Garment That Hangs From The Shoulders
At the end of my junior year, Created this blue summery dress. I used a dress pattern and made my own alterations to alter the fit of the garment and added design elements to achieve the desired aesthetic.
Non-apparel Book Store Bag Manufacturing Activity
For this activity, we worked through the design process of manufacturing a bag to be sold in our school book store. Our target demographic was alumni of NDSU with some disposable income. We designed our bags to be used for school related activated such as sports games, events, tailgating, etc.

Retail Display Window Project
For this project, students were assigned to create a store window display for local boutiques in downtown Fargo. We worked together with the mangers of Onyx + Pearl to brainstorm ideas for a new spring window display.
Inspirations
The process
The processes of building this structure involved drawing and cutting a lot of leaves. We used different shapes and colors to create a realistic structure with different dimensions and structures.

After having all of the leaves cut out, we glued several types together in clumps. We used string to attach the leave clumps to a long like structure that was then hung from the ceiling. While doing this, we paid attention to placement and lengths in order to make the most realistic structure.
Lastly, we picked out outfits and accessories to best complement the window display. We choose a variety of bright colors, florals, and neutrals.
